Games in 2023 and beyond is shaping up to be a pretty strong year for the latest survival games, and you’re gonna require something sharp to hack your path through them.

The year forward is looking like a promising one for the survival genre, and that’s outstanding news for lovers because 2022 was a bit disappointing when it arrived at the latest survival games in 2023 and beyond. There were a few gems scattered throughout the year, particularly in Earlier Access, like vampire survival game V Rising colony-builder Stranded: Alien Dawn, and survival city builder Farthest Frontier. And Dwarf Fortress’s Steam release, at lengthy last, closed out the year.

For the most part, 2022 handled lighter than current years for new survival games, mostly due to pauses, as several great games missed their release dates and slid into 2023.

But put the past after you and look forward to the future. It’s the new year and we’re sharpening our axes for the months forward. Here are 12 survival games to look ahead to in 2023.

Frostpunk 2

11-bit studios haven’t precisely verified that Frostpunk 2 will be out in 2023, though it did state that a leaked date of 2024 was “false.” In other words, we’re holding our fingers crossed that “arriving soon” doesn’t mean we’ll have to wait all the way until 2025 for the follow-up to such an effective game. The post-apocalyptic survival city builder and society simulator sequel continue the effort to stay warm on a frozen planet, this time advancing from the era of coal burning into the age of oil. Naturally, the greatest threat to survival is still just what you’d hope: humanity itself.

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl

It’s been a long, long road for Stalker 2, which will really be the fourth Stalker game. Originally scheduled for 2012, the open-world survival FPS was later canceled but re-declared in 2018 when developer GSC Game World reformed. The most current delay was fully understandable: the devs were located in Kyiv and had to relocate to Prague due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We’re yet hopeful Stalker 2 meets its late 2023 release date.

Wizard with a Gun

Craft enchanted ammo and unload on your opponents in this base-building survival sandbox.

Ark 2

Who’s ready for some Dinos and Diesel? A sequel to the Early Access survival game hit Ark: Survival Evolved is set to arrive in 2023, along with an animated series that will also feature Fast and Furious star, Vin Diesel. We don’t know much about Ark 2 just yet, but its trailer displays what you’d hope from studio Wildcard: lots of dinosaurs and humans riding in them.

Sons of the Forest

Fans of the gruesome horror survival game The Forest hopefully won’t have too much extended to wait for its sequel. Sons of the Forest was initially due in May of 2022, then was bumped to October, and is now scheduled for February 2023. This time you’re exploring a remote island for a missing billionaire, but we hope things too fast go wrong, forcing you to carve out a life there, building and crafting and fending off bloodthirsty cannibals.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria

The first survival game set in Tolkien’s world will take you in-depth into the ruins of Khazad-dûm, the former dwarven kingdom, in the Fourth Age of Middle-world. Play either alone or co-op as you mine for minerals like mithril, build a base, fight orcs and goblins (and probably much worse), and craft weapons and machinery in-depth beneath the mountains.

Palworld

We’ve been calling it “Pokémon with guns” because, frankly, that’s just what it looks like. A bright fantasy world with adorable and cuddly creatures to collect, but also weighty machine guns and forced labor camps. Palworld is bizarre, but we can’t speak we’re not interested in playing it. Farm food, survive harsh weather, and gather an army of critters to fight alongside you. (If any of them die, you can always consume them.)

State of Decay 3

Declared in 2020, recent news of the State of Decay 3 has been stunningly sparse, but we’re still wishing for a 2023 release.

The Day Before

This one’s a bit of a wildcard. On the power of a couple of extended trailers with some weighty DayZ and The Division vibes, The Day Before rocketed to the top of Steam’s most-wish-listed games, but we haven’t listened to much of it since. It’s ambitious a large open world with both rural and urban areas, zombies, vehicles, PvP, looting, and survival. That’s a ton of moving parts to handle, and while we’re hopeful it’ll deliver we’re not precisely confident it’ll be quite as fine as it looks.

Nightingale

Like multiple of 2022’s games, Nightingale’s Earlier Access release slid into 2023. The survival and crafting game set in the Victorian Era notices you stranded in a bizarre realm filled with monsters and magic where you can create an estate and craft weapons and gear. Portals to other realms containing special resources can be unlocked, and interestingly war isn’t the only way to deal with opponents: you might be capable to negotiate truces with specific factions, like giants, to avoid cracking every issue with a shotgun blast.

Wanderlost

An adorable and cartoony survival game where you hunt, craft, and fight zombies.

Ascent of Ashes

RimWorld modders are creating their own standalone survival game with a concentration on real-time tactics battle.
