Snapchat brings chat and video calls to the web. The features of the app such as chat and video calls have been introduced to desktops via new web apps. Making it the first time the company has extended its services beyond smartphones.

With Snapchat for Web, you can sign in with your account to send private messages and call your friends on your desktop. Initially, the web platform will be available only to Snapchat Plus subscribers. Also, it will be the first major feature release since Snap announced the paid tier in June. First accessed by subscribers from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Snapchat is only compatible with Google’s Chrome browser, not Apple’s Safari.

The app was designed as a visual messaging app, but Nathan Boyd, head of messaging products, says web services make sense because users are more likely to use desktop computers. With the upcoming AR lens for Snap, Snapchat for Web provides additional space for users to chat and make phone calls in the same window.

Snap has established itself primarily as an AR platform for lenses. But the main use cases for the app are still personal short-term messaging and calling. This causes the web version of Snapchat to compete with Discord and Meta’s WhatsApp. Which is also available on the desktop. According to Boyd, 100 million people call Snapchat every month, spending an average of 30 minutes or more a day. Usually chatting before closing the app is the last.

“We are always looking for ways to pick up our community where we are,” he said in an interview. “I felt like it was an undeveloped opportunity.”

The launch of the Subscriber Web Extension initially shows that the company is taking the paid tier seriously as an additional money-making opportunity. Snapchat is under unprecedented pressure to monetize 332 million active users (more than Twitter) per day as leadership warns that revenue growth is slowing.
