Uber announced the launch of Uber Pro, a driver loyalty program focused on rewarding its top drivers. Eligible drivers can get ‘On the Road’ benefits like discounted car maintenance , gas station cash backs, free dent repair and faster airport pickups. “Off the Road” benefits include “fully funded” education courses at Arizona State University that drivers can transfer to their family as well. The program is in beta and is launched in the following 8 US cities: Seattle, Chicago, New Orleans, Phoenix, Orlando, Tampa, Denver and New Jersey.
How it works?
Drivers who meet the service quality criteria earn points for every ride. The more points drivers collect, the more rewards they unlock.
What is the eligibility criteria for Uber Pro?
To be an Uber Pro driver, you need to maintain a 4.85 rating and a low cancellation rate. Drivers earn points on every trip for fixed 3 month periods. The points earned in this period unlocks tier statuses (Gold, Platinum & Diamond) which provides new rewards to avail. Uber has not disclosed what the “low cancellation” rate is. Based on a Redditor Dubby7, Uber expects drivers to have a cancellation rate lower than 4% and also have an acceptance rate of 85% or higher.
What are the rewards in Uber Pro?
Uber has not detailed the list of rewards yet. However, we found the following highlights so far. We will keep updating this section as we hear more.
- Gold: Up to 3% Cash Back on gas at all stations with Uber Visa Debit Card and Quest promotions
- Platinum: Earn 3% extra on time and distance rates and 100% tuition coverage at ASU Online.
- Diamond: Earn 6% extra on time and distance rates and faster picks at select airports.
The tuition is transferable to your family, namely spouses, domestic partners, children, siblings, parents, legal guardians or dependents. This, in our opinion, is a strong benefit that makes this worthwhile. Drivers can choose from 80+ undergraduate degrees, 8 different English language courses tailored to their skill level, or get certified in entrepreneurship. These are online courses that start at 4 hours at each and offers the flexibility of doing what you can, when you can.
Uber has partnered with CarAdvise, a leading vehicle repair & maintenance technology platform that will provide Uber Pro drivers access to over 20,000 shops where they can get upto a 25% discount on maintenance activities.
Reactions from the Driver community
There is a broadly negative sentiment among Drivers, primarily on account of the high bar imposed by Uber to participate in this program. The primary concern was around the “4%” cancellation rate that drivers feel is too low, especially when a lot of the cancellation is on account of riders.
