Why WhatsApp web doesn’t work without WhatsApp on your mobile app? This question often arises in your mind whenever you try to open WhatsApp web on your desktop. This question is explained in the privacy policy of WhatsApp.

In its privacy policy, it clearly stated a statement related to WhatsApp web. It says ”We do not retain your messages in the ordinary course of providing our services to you. Instead, your messages are stored on your device and not typically stored on our servers. Once your messages are delivered, they are deleted from our servers”.This statement very well explains the above question.

Let’s go deeper into this topic-

Journey of a message on WhatsApp

When you send a message to someone it first goes to the WhatsApp server. Then the WhatsApp server sends it to the receiver. When the receiver receives the message, it is deleted from the WhatsApp server. The message was in encrypted form and can be decrypted only on the device of the receiver.

Working of Whatsapp Web-

When you try to access WhatsApp chats on the WhatsApp web, the WhatsApp server needs not get anything from there as it is already there. Whatsapp sends the recent chats to the WhatsApp server temporarily and stores them till the time the WhatsApp web session is on. These chats are then transferred from the WhatsApp server to the device in which the WhatsApp web is already open. So this is how it works.

Apart from that WhatsApp also states in its privacy policy that ”If a message cannot be delivered immediately (for example, if the recipient is offline), we keep it in encrypted form on our servers for up to 30 days as we try to deliver it. If a message is still undelivered after 30 days, we delete it”.This means that if you will send the WhatsApp message to someone who is offline at present moment, your message will be encrypted on WhatsApp servers for 30 days and it can be delivered within those 30 days. But after the completion of 30 days, the WhatsApp server will delete that message and it cannot be delivered.
